Facebook Supports Illegal West Bank Occupation

Facebook recently found itself in some hot water when Jewish settlers in the West Bank noticed that they were being listed as residents of “Palestine.” After receiving accusations of having “a political agenda” from the settlers, Facebook cowed to pressure and now allows users to choose between being listed as residents of Israel or Palestine.

This may seem like a small matter given the much graver injustices present in Palestine today, but it still serves as a reminder of how easily we accept Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestinian land–something a recent Baltimore Sun op-ed took note of:

Every few days, Israel’s prime minister repeats his commitment to freeze West Bank settlements and remove illegal outposts. Such commitments and statements from successive Israeli governments have been a part of our lives since the 1993 Oslo agreement. However, since then, the number of the settlers in the occupied territories has more than doubled.
